Pre Sale Questions
We’re happy to clarify the difference between Natural White vs. Regular White Hanadama Grade Akoya pearls. Natural White refers to the untreated Hanadama pearl. These pearls have been individually selected from freshly harvested pearls for their color and luster. The color tends to be closer to a stark white, most often with silver or naturally-occurring pink overtones. There will be a notation on your Pearl Science Laboratory certificate stating there has been no color treatments or other additions to the pearls. Regular White Hanadama pearls usually have more of a rose overtone due to the fact it undergoes a process called pinking. This process will tend to leave pearls with a slight pink or silver-rose tone, and create a more uniform color. Natural White Hanadama pearls are priced higher than the Regular White because these strands are rarer than the Regular White Hanadama. Natural white Hanadama pearls must be matched perfectly with no treatment and still pass the stringent Hanadama grading process. To read more, please check out this blog post! The seven important factors in determining the value of pearls are: Luster – The most important of all value attributes in a pearl is luster. Luster is defined as the quality and quantity of light reflecting from the surface or from under the surface of a pearl. Size – When the other value factors are equal within a pearl type, the larger the pearl size measured in millimeters, the higher the value. Shape – Pearls come in a wide variety of shapes but in most circumstances, the more round the pearl, the higher the value. Color – Depth and consistency of color in the body of the pearl help determine the value. Surface Quality – The cleaner the surface of a pearl (fewer bumps, marks and dull spots) the more valuable the pearl. Matching ability – The equality or unity of pearl size adds to the value of the pearl. Nacre thickness – This is only relative to bead-nucleated pearls as non-beaded (traditional freshwater pearls and keshi pearls) are 100% nacre. The thicker the nacre and regularity of its layers in a saltwater pearl, the more valuable a pearl. If the pearl displays a chalky or dull appearance, the nacre is too thin. Unlike their freshwater cousins, Akoya pearl oysters rarely produce more than 1-2 pearls per harvest. Their perfectly-round shape combined, with the high luster found in top-quality Akoya pearls, and their relative rarity when compared to freshwater pearls give Akoya pearls a higher perceived value. Freshwater pearls are grown primarily in man-made lakes and ponds in China. A single freshwater pearl mussel can also grow up to 32 pearls at a time, 16 on either side of the shell.
